kATHRYN E. PATTEN

Kathryn (Kate) E. Patten (B. Ed., M.A., Ph.D.) is an adjunct professor with ENGRAMMETRON, the educational neuroscience laboratory at Simon Fraser University. Kate is the first editor and co-author of Educational Neuroscience: Initiatives and Emerging Issues. Her Ph.D. elucidates the Somatic Appraisal Model of Affect, a new paradigm for educators and researchers. As Director of the Neuro Emotional Literacy Program (NELP), Kate currently researches, designs and conducts workshops for children, parents, foster parents, educators, elders, and childcare providers. She oversees the development and delivery of NELP. NELP workshops focus on improving emotional literacy in order to promote emotional and physical well-being in school settings, familial groups, and workplaces.

bEATRIZ aRAUJO

Beatriz Araujo is the manager of the Neuro Emotional Literacy Program in Vancouver. She has a psychology degree from UBC and is currently focusing on improving emotional literacy to promote an overall better well-being for individuals. She has conducted workshops for single mothers, refugee families, childcare providers, neighborhood communities, educators and groups of volunteers. The program emphasizes the neuroscience and neuropsychology of emotions and how to master and model healthy regulation strategies.

Scope of NELP


Mission, B.C.

Mission NELP primarily operates at West Heights Elementary School in Mission, BC. This program in partnered with School District #75, Mission.  The district covers copying costs and provides physical facilities and liability insurance for participants. NELP includes three separate groups of parents, and a group of educational assistants and teachers.

Dr. Patten also delivers workshops to other groups, such as foster parents, aboriginal parents and elders, psychologists, childcare workers, elementary school students, and organizations that want to improve employee well-being.

 

Vancouver, B.C.

Vancouver, NELP is operated at several different agencies including neighborhood houses, non-profit organizations and resource centers. The various agencies provide physical facilities and liability insurance for the participants.

Beatriz Araujo conducts workshops to various audiences including single mothers, refugee families, childcare providers, educators, groups of volunteers and the Downtown Eastside community.
